Comparative sequence analysis revealed the existence of several new HMGN nuclear proteins. The cellular function of these proteins is under investigation. Of particular interest is the new protein NSBP-1 (also named NP-45) (Shirakawa et al, JBC, 275, 6368, 2000) whose expression is developmentally regulated.

We found that HMGN proteins contain 3 functional domains:
NLS: A bipartite nuclear localization signal
NBD: A nucleosomal binding domain
Unfolding: A chromatin unfolding domain
