Posttranslational Modifications, HMG Trafficking, and HMG Function

Posttranslational modifications of histones play a major role in regulating various states of chromatin compaction and the expression of specific genes.

HMGN proteins are posttranslationally modified by enzyme complexes. We are using a variety of techniques, including the use of specific antibodies, to study the mechanisms whereby these posttranslational modifications affect the manner in which HMGN proteins bind to chromatin, enter the nucleus, and move in the cell.
