Making an Appointment

The diagnosis of a brain tumor can be a frightening and overwhelming experience. The staff and physicians at the Neuro-Oncology Branch (NOB) have worked through this process with thousands of patients and their families. Our support team works hard to simplify the process of coordinating appointments and travel arrangements. We also believe strongly in communicating and working with your other health care providers—with your permission—to form your "expert care team."

Make an Appointment

We understand that many patients feel it is urgent to get started with their care. Appointments to see our neuro-oncologists, neurosurgeons, and radiation oncologists are usually available within a few days. Our patient care coordinators are experts in arranging for appointments, studies, and travel. To get started:

  1. Call our patient care coordinators Monday–Friday from 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. EST at: 1-866-251-9686 or (301)-594-6767 to arrange an appointment time and discuss what you will need before your first visit.

  2. Before your first appointment, we may ask you to provide us with the following:
    • Medical records, including surgical, pathology, and radiation reports; chemotherapy records; doctor’s notes
    • CDs with MRIs; CTs; and PET scans
    • List of medications
  3. Consultations are free of charge. Once a patient is accepted on a natural history and/or research protocol, medical treatments, diagnostic tests, and other services performed at the NIH Clinical Center are free of charge. NIH does not cover expenses for medical services at other facilities.

  4. The Neuro-Oncology Branch is located at the National Institutes of Health campus in Bethesda, Maryland, approximately 8 miles north of Washington, D.C. Our clinic is located on the 13th floor of the Magnuson Clinical Center, building 10, in the center of the NIH campus. Learn more about the Clinical Center (Map).
